Science relies on the search for answers. This statement infers that the purpose of a research enterprise is to find answers by the “production of new knowledge and the advancement and training of research practitioners.” The enterprise is a complex system because human, physical, and digital infrastructures work together to expand the boundaries of science and knowledge.

Knowledge is defined as “acquaintance with facts, truths, or principles,” however in this context, we focus on the “production of new knowledge.” This emphasizes the “search” involved in research and the importance of modern facilities and training programs.

The advancement of science (through research enterprises) has increased exponentially through digital infrastructures. It might be rational to say that research enterprises only began when a human first developed a physical infrastructure. As of now, humans are essential in research enterprises and through our research, we hope to find new processes or infrastructures to add to the system. Will humans one day be unnecessary in research enterprises? Probably not, but the nature of science and research that makes this a valid question. 

Lastly, the quote says that research enterprises function to “support” progress, acknowledging the uncertainties of any research as well as the fundamental fallacies of science. That any knowledge, new or old, cannot be verified and furthermore that a research enterprise is driven by curiosity.

    Hmmm… Why do you think that knowledge cannot be verified? I would argue that Newtonian dynamics is a body of knowledge that describes relationships between physical properties like mass, velocity, force, etc. That body of knowledge is certainly verifiable, and has indeed been verified for centuries. (Of course, it’s not a complete model of dynamics, as it requires modifications for high speed motion and motion under strong gravity, for example. But within the realm of most terrestrial motion, it simply works.)
